Poor Grace takes a bit of a backseat, buried under boxes of paperwork, and Reggie and Ox team up to chase unlikely conspiracy theories (mainly about the royal family). I patiently await the next instalment of The Stranger Times, a series I hope exists for as long as live, and with the truly mind blowing amount of stories that could be told, I thoroughly expect it too. With Banecroft distracted, the shock resignation of assistant editor, Hannah Willis, couldn’t have come at a worse time.

There’s clearly a lot more to come for our intrepid team, and I can’t wait to find out what happens next. And as always, Love Will Tear Us Apart is funny, as expected from McDonnell, at times reminiscent of the late great Sir Terry Pratchtett. Actually… Banecroft is finding the issues with his dead wife speaking to him through Simon's ghost (!

Hannah leaves The Stranger Times to do some investigation on a wellness retreat/cult, meanwhile a previous contributor of the paper disappears without a trace. They investigate some more paranormal occurrences, this time with ghosts appearing, with the help of some other recurring and new characters. With the new assistant on board, they prepare for 'Loon Day' - where they open the doors to the public, who offer up their outrageous stories for a chance to appear in the pages of The Stranger Times, people like Smokey, who suffers from Cigaretteasexyopia.

But why are we adding them when half the old ones could have been given a bigger role without swamping us with needless people. He always believed there was something fishy around her death, never quite sure she was actually dead and now he might actually have been proved right. As with both The Stranger Times and This Charming Man, Love Will Tear Us Apart is a riotous, hilarious story filled with plenty of heart… if you look really, really deep. His debut novel, A Man With One of Those Faces – a comic crime novel – was published in 2016 and spawned The Dublin Trilogy books and the spin-off McGarry Stateside series. I was pleased to pick out the ‘correct’ fictional conspiracy theory, which sub-plot was excellently put together.
