Description

A peat free blend that is developed specially for the needs of all young plants to help them establish. Can refer to either home-made garden compost or seed/potting compost: • Garden compost is a soil improver made from decomposed plant waste, usually in a compost bin or heap. Loam is currently in short supply and the soil-based material used appears to be highly variable and not necessarily consistent with what is commonly understood to be a medium loam.

They mention that it's brilliant for growing from seed medium, it has a close to 100% germination rate, and is beneficial for seeds and sprouting seedlings.

I'm sorry to say this seems as though it was mixed with sand - but on the plus side has very few sticks (Quite a lot of stones but they're very small, I doubt they would do any harm if left in by mistake ) and it's very Fine , so you don't have sift the compost with your hands when sowing , which can take up a lot of time . John Innes' recipes offer significant advantages over soil-free potting media due to their weight, trace element content and the effect of soil content in avoiding undue chemical and water fluctuations (buffering activity). As the formulation includes loam (soil), this makes for a reduction in peat used, making for a modern day more environmental growing compost. In addition, texture will differ depending on whether stacked, rotted turf is used or whether the source is an arable field. Each of the John Innes Compost’s are produced, in various ratios, to produce a more specific compost.

This good absorption and release of water and nutrients is sometimes referred to as having a high level of “buffering”. N) Nitrogren to facilitate healthy growth of leaves, stems, and roots, as well as stimulate chlorophyll production, supporting photosynthesis. John Innes No 3 contains the highest levels of fertilizer and is suitable for mature plants growing in pots, such as shrubs, small trees, perennials, and conifers. John Innes composts have been widely used by gardeners for over 60 years and are valued for their consistently good performance. Root cuttings can be placed in a cold frame or sheltered spot out of direct sunlight and can benefit from a thin layer of grit on the growing medium surface.

Organic matter is also contained within the loam; this provides slow release exchange sites for nutrition, promoting slow release of fertiliser to the plant. Loam is the most important ingredient as it provides a natural reservoir of plant foods, trace elements and contains some organic matter which releases nitrogen slowly to the plant. A method of growing new plants from parts of an existing plant, such as sections of root, stem, leaf or bud.

To grow well, plants need a wide range of nutrients in various amounts, depending on the individual plant and its stage of growth. With all the composts, supplementary feeding using liquid feeds can be carried out once plants are well established in their pots - usually 6-8 weeks after potting when the roots are through to the sides of the pot. White mould: under certain conditions a white mould may appear on the surface of some of the particles in SylvaGrow John Innes Seed Compost. Enriched with vermiculite to retain moisture and nutrients, it also feeds for the first three weeks. John Innes composts weigh much more than other types of potting compost as the key ingredient is loam, or soil, along with peat or peat substitute, sand, and fertilizer. The low level of fertiliser makes this ideally suited for potting of sensitive species or initial potting of seedlings or rooted cuttings.
