I drag it far, in the snowstorm, drag it to the end of the street — white falling, then it's dark again. What’s most harrowing about Drunk Mom is that you can’t stop reading it—this, the dark, now-told tale that lurks in the shadow of every seemingly normal family. You need good people around you, you need connections, you need intellectual components such as literature and you need to do whatever brings you joy. In the past two years, many of us have had to re-examine what happily ever after means, and we’ve all had to adapt quickly to ever-changing circumstances.

Hearing one side of a conversation is so odd to begin with; it’s like eavesdropping, but the picture painted seems much more mysterious than if you could hear the other person. I used to wishfully think that the memoir would guarantee my own happily ever after, now that I was account- able to the entire world.

The judge said psychological reports made it clear that Darrian's death had a 'significant impact' on Tilby's mental health and she had suffered a 'deep depression'.

At the outset of his ruling on Tuesday, Mr Justice Fraser said: 'This is undoubtedly a very tragic case. That may be poetic and true for her, but it does not make this a memoir about motherhood anxiety or a cautionary tale about what happens when Mommy needs a drink too many. Witnesses saw Tilby (pictured) holding the baby while dancing and CCTV footage showed her holding him above her head and throwing him in the air before catching him.

I am a wolf, sometimes (admittedly) in sheep's clothing, but blood is blood, and the media, well, unfortunately that can often feel like the sport. The view was definitely exotic: A giant, rust-bitten ship, tinted with the yellow and purple light of a sunrise, its deck filling up with workers, visible from where my boyfriend and I were sitting, enjoying the view of the docks. When the book first came out I talked about it and about addiction on TV, on the radio and in this very magazine, too. It's just like alcoholism: the recklessness of it; the abandonment of responsibility to her partner, to their relationship, to her child, now almost 4, and also, most painfully, to herself. The cool yet raw efficiency of Bydlowska's prose, a testament to her successful journalistic career, repudiates indulgence of any kind.
