Description

This is a selection of sample images from the Canon IXUS 220 HS camera, which were all taken using the 12 megapixel Fine JPEG setting. I love having the 24mm wide-angle, the video works nicely, and the auto white balance and exposure are pretty good (when I keep it at -2/3 stop). Give the shutter release button a half press and after a briefly visible moment of focus adjustment/exposure determining, AF points/s appear highlighted as green squares. First of all, I should make it clear that the new camera is not going to be replacing my Olympus E-1, a sophisticated if now aging DSLR which I will continue to use for serious photography. three or six frames per second to provide a time-lapse movie style effect, further extending the camera’s creative uses.

There is also a decent amount of noise visible on low-light images, which is to be expected as the ISO climbs. An unrivaled combination of HS system-powered performance with classic IXUS design; the IXUS 220 HS offers ultra-wide 5x zoom, Full HD and superior low light shooting in a sleek stainless steel body. Another interesting thing to try would be to leave the i-Contrast on, but force the flash (On), again only possible in the manual mode (P), but that might not always work as expected. Program mode provides you with more control, allowing you to determine settings such as ISO, White Balance and metering.

But if you want to use a different exposure mode – say Hi Speed Burst or one of the modes formerly known as Creative Effects, then you have to scroll through a menu containing no fewer than 25 options. Press the on/off button and the ELPH 300 HS / IXUS 220 HS is ready to take a shot in about two and a half seconds; that’s on the slow side of average, but comparable with other ELPH / IXUS models. At first I thought this was related to settings but after resetting all settings, the problem remains. But if the scene has some really bright (in the sun) or dark (shadows) parts, auto mode is untrustworthy once again - pictures could be great, but also very bad - with colors being washed out, or "burnt" (overexposed, too bright areas that lost all the details, or people`s faces looking unnaturally pink). A full HD movie mode with crystal clear stereo sound and Dynamic IS to stabilise against shake is supplied; offering full HD 1920 x 1080 at 24fps, or HD 1280 x 720 at 30fps.Speed also adds to creativity when filming video clips, thanks to the 240fps Slow Motion movie mode – although footage is shot at a low-quality 320×240 resolution. Firmware is permanent software which is installed on your product and enables it to function correctly. Yes, you`ll be able to capture a bit smaller part of the scene (as with 28mm, for example), but what`s important is that there won`t be any distortion in the picture, and 24mm is not meant to be used for this type of pictures anyway - at least not yet, and not without a certain knowledge about the way the optics work. The conclusion being either I was unlucky enough to receive a camera where the lens was slightly ‘off’ or the Canon Ixus 220 HS just takes shots that way. For certain products, a driver is necessary to enable the connection between your product and a computer.

In summing up, whilst the Canon IXUS 220 HS is not the most innovative model of recent months to land on our test slab, all things considered it's another Recommended award from the Photographyblog team of testers for anyone looking for an undemanding good value pocket camera that will deliver decent image quality with the minimum of fuss.A press of the ‘func/set’ button in Smart Auto mode brings up a toolbar on the left side of the screen with a very limited array of options: self timer, the ability to control image aspect ratio, plus a choice of JPEG image size (Large, two Medium options, Small) and compression level (Fine or Normal) depending on how many shots you want to squeeze on to your SD, SDHC or SXHC memory card – there’s no internal memory supplied with the camera. Ranged parallel to this is a two-setting slider switch for alternating between Smart Auto, the default scene and subject recognizing option for pure point and shoot operation, and Program auto, via which a greater range of hands on control including effects filters can be accessed.

Please have in mind that this is purely my personal feeling about it, and it may differ from person to person, maybe even from one camera sample to another. The IXUS 220 HS’s stainless steel body lends the camera a sturdy yet lightweight feel, but there’s no hand grip here. Photo enthusiasts wanting a more feature-packed portable model should direct their gaze towards the Canon PowerShot S95 and G12 cameras.
