It boasts, amongst other more explicit things which I was not entirely sure I could include in this piece, the strength and size of its titular character and ends with the phrase ‘ Aja, and she was the mother of nine children, too! I could see the roots of Grimm’s Fairytales and Mother Goose in these stories, and there were several stories based around the Cinderella theme, Rumpelstiltskin and elements of Snow White. They are not always attractive or moral, but they are certainly memorable, and you can almost always understand why the stories about them have been passed down through so many generations.

Some of the fairytales are great, some are local versions of well known fairytales and some are plainly and simply strange. But that still leaves a pretty huge selection, and you would think, for instance, that a curator might include a few examples of the Cinderella story and leave out the rest. The book left me wanting more… I wanted to read about the origins of these stories and why the details changed form region to region. I not finished reading it yet but its a lovely book to dip into when you want to escape the world for a while before bed.

Probably best as a coffee table book for the occasional pickup and journey into the land of the strange.Whereupon the old woman proceeded to pull sea scorpions out of her vagina, one after another, until she fell over dead. This is probably a great read if you like this kind of thing but for me I won't be rushing to get anymore short stories I'm afraid. The trade-off for that of course is that few of the stories can amount to more than that weirdness, but given their length that's probably fine. This collection contains lyrical tales, bloody tales and hilariously funny and ripely bawdy stories from countries all around the world - from the Arctic to Asia - and no dippy princesses or soppy fairies.

I’ve loved this book since it first came out and had to get a replacement copy after I loaned it out.It is definitely a "that's so random" quality that I like about them, the sense that the palette of things that can happen is so much wider relative to the familiar tropes of the form than in other genres. I think this is a good book to keep close to bed, in case you don't really feel like reading anything too long or engaging. The width of cultures means that there are all styles of story - long, short, gore, spiritual, teaching tales and entertainment. Some are more earnest in their endeavour to convince us of the happy ending than others; the Norwegian story of ‘Tatterhood’ makes a great effort, ending with the phrase ‘if you make haste and run to the king’s palace, I dare say you’ll find there’s still a drop of bridal ale left for you’.

The Icelandic stories tended to involve the women making themselves appear as men with penises made out of bits of seal, and there were quite a few stories involving jealous step mothers and step fathers, and cannibalism… These are proper folk fairy stories that have been handed down from generation to generation. Other than acting as a concluding statement, can ‘It served the little b***h right, too’ – from the North American story ‘The Good Girl and the Ornery Girl’ – really be thought to be serving the same purpose as ‘Mulberry, mulberry/So ends my story. She adapted a number of her short stories for radio and wrote two original radio dramas on Richard Dadd and Ronald Firbank.

A collection of folklore from around the world, tales of wise women, crafty witches and resourceful maidens… the woman-centric theme doesnt intrude, just makes it a more cohesive collection than most fable anthologies.
