The majority of it is unbearable pain with the briefest moments of relief, and the rest is a compilation of the sweetest, most wonderful moments I've read in this series, so far. But finally getting to see how deranged Kolis’s thinking is, how pathetic his justifications and his sad boy want to be loved for the insane person he is…was fantastic. Every time I close yet another book in this series, I am only left with nothing but gratitude, respect, want and an undying love for these characters, but I’ll be honest that last page ache is hitting hard. I have my suspicions of what’s to come for Poppy and how the events of this book might tie into the FBAA universe. Again, a lot of what happens surrounding and regarding him feels like spoilers, and I definitely don’t want to inadvertently spill anything.

He seemed so genuine in his words and the emotion behind them, that I couldn’t help but believe him. I loved getting insight into the foundation and creation of things that we as the reader experience with Poppy and Cas. I’m getting fed up with Sera’s repetitive inner thoughts, and I would have loved to know more about what Ash thought and went through, even a few Kolis’ chapters would have been a nice and intriguing change. After being quite disappointed with A Soul of Ash and Blood, because I thought it was a pointless book and it was way too long for what little it brought to the plot, I was wary of this one, because this series went from being 3 to 4 books sometimes this year and I was dreading another long and pointless filler book.

The first half of the book was similar to The War of Two Queens, in that Nyktos is out of commission. There were still some repetitive conversations and the unending inner monologues of Sera, but the change of setting and the new characters brought some nice changes, thankfully. IMO this is what happens when you only give ARC copies to readers in your cult fan group who refuse to give constructive criticism. Nyktos is largely absent from the first part, but he makes up for that by making quite the entrance after!

I really enjoyed the first two books in the series, and I knew with the way ALITF left off, there was a lot that was bound to happen. The primals, the courts, the political intrigue, I’m so excited to see how that plays out in the next book because I love it. I'm not even half way through and had to go read reviews to see if it gets better, apparently it does not. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. She’s such a strong character and with everything she’s gone through and then goes through in this book, it’s amazing.
