Crisp writing, humorous asides, and fully fleshed characters and relationships – many queer – keep things fresh, leading to a genuinely hopeful ending that centers themes of authenticity and autonomy. Beige-and-pink wallpaper, porcelain countertop lined with rosewater skincare products and a bottle of her signature nail polish (Essie, Ballet Slippers). This is a brilliant book that looks at the lives of teenagers and the perfect world some feel they have to fit into because of family, beliefs and life. I’m as far removed from the experience of a queer high school student in the Bible Belt as it is possible to be, but I do know something about conservative societies, and the way the author tells the story makes it relatable to everyone. It’s hard to watch [Alex] fall in love with Henry without falling in love a bit yourself with them, and with this brilliant, wonderful book.

No sex, lightweight, unexpected, but sweet, romance for several of the characters and an uplifting ending…what more could you wish for? hey siri how do i tattoo this entire book behind my eyelids so i can read it every time i close my eyes !a home i’ve never been to before, but immediately felt safe, loved, like there was space for me to exist. Just her friends in fancy outfits piling into Benjy’s car, screaming Lil Yachty in a room with a chandelier, and collapsing into a Waffle House booth at one in the morning.

Imagine having all that hatred in the beginning of the book and seeing Chloe slowly, through her obsession, start to fall for the missing girl. The reading experience can be subjective, so I’ll try my best to be as realistic as possible when I talk about the parts of this book that didn’t work for me. The three have nothing in common except Shara and the annoyingly cryptic notes she left behind, but together they must untangle Shara’s trail of clues and find her. There were parts that were just so well done, that I really could appreciate, other times I was scratching my head. It's an amazing thing that children today have books like this to help them feel seen and I hope this reaches as many of them as possible.

Lo que hizo que odiara la primera mitad fue que ¿me pareció una calca de Ciudades de Papel de John Green? A pair of black Vans appears on the windowsill, bringing with them the skinny frame of a boy in distressed jeans and a flannel. I think we all know that religion is not an easy subject to touch on in a book and I thought McQuiston did very well. The big thing for me was that the book really relies on Chloe and Shara’s rivals to lovers relationship, which I feel could have been reframed. I just want to preface it by saying that I am not the biggest fan of young adult mysteries or contemporaries, so that could very well be a reason why I wasn't the biggest fan of this book.

Chloe was not a poorly written character, but I didn’t think she was the right fit to star in this particular book. The daughter of two moms, her family moved from Los Angeles to False Beach, Alabama just in time for her to start at the local Christian high school. Dark curly hair with caramel highlights, light brown skin, long and straight nose, a jawline both square and delicate like fishbone. The three have nothing in common except Shara and the annoyingly cryptic notes she left behind, but together they must untangle Shara's trail of clues and find her.Shara Wheeler is doing what she does: a doe-eyed performance of blank innocence that makes everyone think she must be so deep and complex and enchanting when really, she’s the most boring bore in this entire unbearably boring town. Let me jump back to some of the good because this is still a McQuiston book so there was a lot of good besides the well done secondary characters. Thank you to MacMillan’s Children’s Books and the author for sending me an advanced copy of this book in exchange for an honest review! A YA novel with a swoon-worthy romance readers have come to expect from their first two triumphant works.
