I was just wondering um okay, and then we shift to a teaching scene, her worry about Joe, and then her going away for the weekend.

Joe screens the first part of his new 3 part series for the group and to her horror, Joe has incorporated a traumatic and painful incident from her childhood into his plot that she shared with him in the strictest confidence.

This being said, I would have to say that Between Us ranks pretty low on my rankings for McFarlane’s books. This one came out a little stronger, thank goodness, but either I'm broken (I swear, I'm not in a slump, I'm opposite slumping, my reading is posture-perfect! The pacing perhaps felt a little off, with the first half rather slow, and then a bit too much happening in the second half. When Roisin and Joe join their friends for a weekend at a country house, it's a triple celebration--a birthday, an engagement, and the launch of Joe's shiny new TV show. I was struggling to find time to read this one with my final college semester starting but after midterms this week I just read as much as I could.

Don’t miss the brilliant and hilarious new romantic comedy, YOU BELONG WITH ME, coming June 2024 from the queen of romcoms. I did appreciate the side plot around Roisin and her complicated relationship with her mother, and enjoyed their dynamics. I love her heroines, and I mostly loved Roisin even though she did things I didn’t always approve of or understand.

He was a safe place, full of danger…Her feelings for Matthew McKenzie had arrived in two ways: gradually, then suddenly . Some scenes really stayed with me days after reading it, including totally engaging scenes of Roisin handling disrespectful boys in her classroom.

The basic premise of the book is this: on a friends’ getaway, Roisin starts to suspect that her boyfriend’s new TV show picks closely from real life in some of its plot. It was only really half way through I could sense the direction and decide on what I would want to happen. She’s always had a tense relationship with her, especially since she’s very toxic and more obviously favors Roisin’s emotionally unavailable younger brother. In between, Lily and Atlas steal away for romantic moments that are even sweeter for their authenticity as Lily struggles with child care, breastfeeding, and running a business while trying to find time for herself. I question as I usually do whether the male characters would describe their emotional states as candidly as they do but this is a good read and recommended. McFarlane often de-centers the romance in favor of a heroine's development, but here, more than most of her books, the romance is slight. Roisin supported Joe for many years whilst he struggled to make a name in writing but his previous show, the one before this one they are gathering to watch, was a breakout hit and now Joe is a big name with a lot of accolades and a lot of people wanting to work with him.
